How do you know what sex a cat is?

My cat is a home cat his name is Dusty and he has been Sprayed, He got out a few Months ago and met another cat, Dusty was very friendly with the other cat they was chasing each other and playing in the garden.

I have not let him out much since because we have major road where we live. Anyway this other cat sits outside our house most days, When dusty shoots out the door the first thing the other cat does is jump on his back and bites his neck. Is this Mating or is the other trying to kill Dusty? as we think the other cat is a boy but not sure, any advise anyone?

Sounds like the other cat is a male and he thinks Dusty is a lady.  This can happen when a tom cat is neutered.  Poor Dusty, I think the 'friend' is trying to mate with him - it is typical mating behaviour!  How embarrasing - first of all you lose your manhood and then your best friend takes a shine to you!

I have two cats, brothers, who are both male. They play-fight ALL the time and bite each other round the neck a lot - like lions etc i guess.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, Dusty can't get pregnant :) , and you'll know if they're fighting properly because he'll be quite vocal about it! Nice that he's got a friend.

This is such a sweet story.  Dusty sounds wonderful!  I think Englishbird is right, if they really were fighting then cats do tend to be very vocal about it and you would know (not only from their shouting but generally the scratched ears, heads, and clumps of fluff!).

 

FP your post made me laugh so much - now the others in my office are wondering why my work is so funny - how am I going to explain that?

 

My cat, Diego, had his pom poms chopped last year and I don't think he does rudies - I haven't seen or heard anything anyway.  All he seems to do is chase other cats and birds from the garden and then sit and wait for them to try and get in again, to chase them out again, etc. he doesn't fight or hump a lot.

I've got a large community of cats & occasionally the young males (regardless of the fact that they have been neutered) sometimes rush over & grab whatever cat they see as a potential rival in the pecking order(usually a similar age & size)

They do exactly as you've described, and grab a bunch of skin at the back of the other cats neck & act as if they were trying to mate. There doesn't seem to be anything sexual in it...more of a display of dominance.

My cats have always grown out of it, and settle down very happily into the group & remain friends.

I think Dusty's little pal is probably trying to say "I kinda like you, and we can be friends ....but I'm stronger than you & I get all the women...OK!"

A female animal gets spayed (not sprayed or spade)
A male animal gets neutered
