I am barely speaking yet I still have a hoarse voice and have had problems with it since January. My vocal chords look fine and the speech therapist just gave me some exercises which have not helped.
Has anyone else had this, or heard of chronic hoarseness- any idea what I can do?!

I have this.... and I went through all of this. Then they decided it was the way I breathed then they investigated again and found scarring on my vocal chords from an infection. So I am stuck sounding like a west country Gillian Taylforth.

Hopefully you will have better luck!

Do you get acid reflux which might be irritating your throat?

Or are you taking any medications which could have such side effects?
Sorry to be so negative, as what you have is called Functional Aphonia. Thought to be a stress related problem and niceboy is quite correct in that if you continue with the exercises, your voice will return.

I do assume, something that is not clear in your question, that you have seen an ENT surgeon and that your vocal cords are normal.
Jenna 1978 may have touched on something. There is a condition called 'silent gerd' which is the refluxing of stomach acid into the oesphagus and throat. Unlike normal reflus, which causes bad heartburn, tiny amounts of stomach acid shoot into the throat and irritate the vocal chords. However, there is no heartburn. The condition is also called Laryngopharyngeal Reflux . Worth checking out. www.nycornell.org/ent/Laryngopharyngeal.reflux.html

Thanks for your answers- yes I have seen the ENT specialist and the speech therapist. Yes I have also had problems with acid refulx which I think caused the problem initially but have been on Omerprazole for months, and so I hoped it would have helped. It has helped the acid problem but voice is still low and hoarse. I will carry on with the exercises and will see the sppech therapist again next week.
Cleversod- you are utterly pointless. I am genuinely desperate for help and advice - I have had to give up my job because of my voice problem, and also leave my house, as without my job I can't pay the mortgage. I am desperate to get this sorted out, and people on here give really good and useful advice. You clearly do not understand the point of the website, which is to HELP OTHERS IF YOU CAN.
