nowadaays you see buses advertising long city trips in the uk for just �1, is this a con, if not how do they make money

No, not a con, just canny bus operators taking a leaf out of the budget airlines books. To get the bargain price you need to book a long time before ou travel. The nearer the departure date the ticket price increases. The cheaper rates are also on less popular departure times. Also do not expect a luxury coach for this price!

There are also limited number of stops. Certainly worth a try if you are looking for a no-frills trip. The major company that I am aware of allows you to look online so you know the price of the ticket before you book.

That`s basically it........it`s a marketing ploy to encourage bums on seats.  For a bus operator even a �1 fare is better than running `dead`  mileage with empty seats.

As doogle says it`s similar to the budget airlines, but even local about-town services do the same.  In my area they offer 7 days unlimited travel for �18 but the average single fare is around �2..... from one bus stop to the next costs 70 pence........it encourages use and yes they make money.

On a marketing course a few years ago I was told that the most common reason for buying anything is having bought it before. So having got people on to their coaches once, at such a bargain price, the operators know that a good proportion of people, having tried, will buy again.
