does anyone know a cheap insurance company that covers people who have lost their licence in the past to drink driving and who have points on their licence?

There are plenty of companies willing to take on a 'non-standard' risk, but it won't be cheap. Sabre, St Paul's & Cloverleaf spring to mind, but your best bet would be a broker - I don't think many of the direct companies would be interested.
