Here is this weeks Enigmatic Variations

To any EV solver!

I am undertaking the statistics for the Telegraph EV. This is because several people find the timeframe until submission too short and in my opinion there have been some crosswords harder than the listener. It would be interesting to see these statistics and depending on the results may influence this timeframe.

I could never reach the echelon of J Green and it must be stressed I don't submit the EV and never will do. So I have no interest other than seeing how we fare.

E-mail a scanned copy/reconstructed typed grid or a list of the answers with the info of the required theme to [email protected] by 6pm on the Wednesday after the EV (i.e. last post). However please e-mail me whenever you have finished as they will be invaluable to the statistics.

Just use any alias and not your name (if you don't want to) or home address. As we generally do with the listener threads hints and tips only on the threads. Comments are most welcome and I will copy this every week, so spread the word.

thank you for all your kind comments - all is well at the midazolam house!
Thank you DocHH, I did have the 24a but only by the use of one of my lateral leaps of faith (so irritating to my crosswording pal) with the letters I had, no logic involved. I just don't know what it is about this one - it has bored me and I haven't had that 'can't put it down' feeling that one normally gets when one answers the first couple of clues........................maybe I've got a cold coming!

Hello Devadolly,
My first pass through the clues looking for gifts left me thinking I'm going nowhere on this. I was proved wrong! Your lateral leap of faith was nothing of the sort, it was a demonstration of your ability to think laterally, prompted by the EV title, De Bono would be proud of you! A bit more lateral thinking will help, especially in regards to the instruction of 24ac.
As you have 24a, then you may have noticed answers to a few down clues are longer than the bracketed number indicating entry length. A heavy hint on 25d has an answer for a medicine that the recently expanded Midazolam Household might, but hopefully not need to use in future, but that is not the entry! As a new contributor I don't know how much more I can help. However resolution of that might help with the entry of the other 11 thematic clues.

DocHH
Thank you DocHH, had more or less finished it when boredom set in completely. Now I have two deadlines that seem to have sneaked together and have become very pressing so this week's EV has been (metaphorically) thrown over the shoulder. No more 'playing out' until I've done my homework!

Enjoyed chatting with you all

Regards

Well here I am Friday morning with three incomplete and need to move on. Will some kind soul provide clues/hints/explanations for them and put me out of my misery?
37d appears to be bran meaning refuse but why? Clue is refuse to withdraw child fvrom shoot 42a I have ?or One plundering German Markets first and 17a Left game in thickly growing surroundings abounding in water plants for which I have bu?Y.

i saw your post as i was putting up my spectator post

BRAN
FOR
BULY
Question Author
i should add that rush and rage have been removed

bran is in chambers as "the refuse of anything"
Hi Christiana..
37d Bran= refuse
withdraw child from shoot..Bran(ch)
42a Fo(rage)r..one plundering
German markets first ..fora + ger
17a Bul(rush)y..bushy around "L" left+RU Rugby Union.
Thanks M. I now get 17 across and 42 across, but still cant figure out bran- I knew it meant refuseas in rubbish but dont see the cryptic part. Have played with bairnfor child but what about the shoot? I know I will kick myself when I find out.

Ive enjoyed the shedding tearsaspect of the puzzle but didnt really appreciate the straight clues much - not my favourite compiler.
