Aaah the good ol' ays of being at Uni - that brings back memories ....

Ask him how much he reckon he'd be paying if he wasn't being mollycoddled at home - I think he'll find that 40 quid will get him nothing.

Explain to him that the mortgage/rent, gas, electric, food, maintenance/repairs, water, TV licence, council tax, phone, insurances, etc ... all come at a price and now that he is bringing in some money - he should contribute.

I think, bearing in mind the amount he is bringing in, that 40 is a fair amount.
40.00 per week out of 80 odd quid? I used to pay 25.00 a week when in full time work. Are you still getting benefits, and he's going to be at college soon anyway.
I think 1/4 of his pay would be an acceptable amount, i.e. about 25.00 per week - maximum 30.00. I presume he pays for his own clothes, transport, etc.
I think a quarter sounds fair
