Passat Alarm

The battery on our (2002) Passat has died and we've just had a new one delivered, which we intend fitting ourselves (mainly because the car can't be started without a heavy duty jump starter!). How do we disable the battery so that we don't disturb the whole neighbourhood when disconnecting the old battery?

Take out the fuse for the alarm, which I assume there is one?
