Brakes not working

I have an old (H reg) T25 VW Camper Van. It has just had a full service, but when I took it out for the weekend, it was running fine until after about 60mins running the brakes suddenly went! (Much to my horror)- they went very soft and spongy, and only came back if I pumped the pedal.

On the trip back (hopefully to the garage) it was fine but I am very worried.

Any ideas? (My husband it not at all mechanical and he just wants to sell her, but I can't imagine it!)

Thank you.

ps check brake fluid levels
Hi, If the car has had a full service they will, if needed new brakes, if that is the case they have disturbed the fluid system and caused an air lock ( Air in the braking system, not a big job but get them to sort it out without charge as the car was ok before the service. Dont let them try it on!!!!/

It may be a dodgy master cylinder,as they came back after being pumped
with a vehicle as old as this it wouldnt surprise me if a brake pipe has corroded and burst, sounds like a fluid leak to me
If it is noy loosing brake fluid then it could be the master cylinder seals need replacing. My dad's metro did the same on long runs, OK for a time after failing even with a split braking system. Only other thing could be water in the brake fluid causing vapourising on heavy braking, but this is very much overstated and unlikly.
