18th September is Italian independence day (apparently!) but from whom and when did they gain independence?

No, 18 Sept isn't a public holiday in Italy. (19 Sept is a local Feast Day (San Gennaro) in Naples.) Nor has Italy an independence day, but 25 April is Liberation Day, relating to WW2; and 2 June is Republic Day, commemorating the unification of Italy in the 19th century.
