Computer start up

After loading up my new BT broadband, my computer now seems to open up lots of programmes at start-up which I don't want or need. It has gone from my computer being ready to use in one minute to about four.

How can I disable these, and control what automatically opens on start-up?

And most importantly for a non-IT person like me, what precautions should I take!!

Thanks.

goto run on the start menu and type msconfig then click on the startup tab and you can take the tick out of anything you don't want running at startup. only do one thing at a time and restart then if it causes a problem you know what to put the tick back in.

anything your not sure about if you google the name of it that will give you a pretty good idea of what it does.
I had the same problem.

I used this

which I found much better than ploughing through the list msconfig gives you.
