Hi, I have an S-reg 2.5L V6 GSI Vauxhall Vectra, I was driving today and was about to overtake another car, I moved up a gear and put my foot down but the car didnt accellerate but just revved higher and higher until i took my foot off of the accellerator and there was a strong smell of burning. The car still drives ok, I did 2-4 miles after this happened, the gears are still engaging but it feels like theres a loss of pressure. I first assumed that the clutch went but im not really sure, Ive had the car about 18 months and am not sure if its had a new clutch in the past.

sounds like the clutch is slipping.
Check your clutch by applying the handbrake, putting the car in first gear, rev the engine to 2,000 revs and then let go of the clutch quickly. If the engine stalls straightaway your clutch should be fine. If it continues to rev then the clutch id on the way out. Make sure the handbrake is securly on.
or even just try and accelarate up a slightly steep hill in 3rd gear, if the rpm increases with no noticable speed increase, the clutch is burnt out.
