One of my friends has a bird in the garden which sings four or five different songs, including a wolf whistle and a high pitched shriek. It appears to sing from the rooftops or about twenty feet up a tree, starts early a.m.. and goes on for some time. Any ideas please?

A starling maybe? They're very good at imitating other calls, burglar alarms, car alarms, and people whistling!
a starling is the most likely being a distant relative of the mynah bird, but jackdaws can also do impressions
My money's on a Blackbird or a thrush
I'd go with a blackbird as well, we have one with a very varied repertoire that sounds just like you've described.
Me too with the blackbird! Old yellowbeak - garden resident is a very good mimic - whistles like a person, copies other birds etc. Lol!!! Ps: He also makes himself known when he is in need of a titbit!! :o)
