Sparse ?
Could the 'A' be an 'E'?

Sperse (?)
The a comes from the word Lamellate and the clue was Relating to a thin plate or layer
I have checked again with Chambers and I think it has to be an A
Thanks to you all for your help, if not before I will tell you the author's answer next week, as there is bound to be a clue I need hel with.
