mmmmmm i love trifle, is there a traditional topping?, it all sounds lovely to me...... awwwwww hungry now...lol
your mother in law is quite right, a totally traditional trifle has no jelly in it. however, the more modern way of making a trifle is as you do it, so it's all down to personal taste.
the same with the topping. a traditional trifle is just topped with cream - sprinkles, etc., being a more modern thing to do. again, all down to personal taste.
try googling 'traditional trifle' and see what comes up.
