In the 1980s began the Acid House scene, giving rise to Trance, Hardcore, etc. This became mainstream, leading to the Club Scene.  To compliment this, many clubs installed a chillout Room, where Chillout music could be listened to.  Meanwhile, Goth grew out of Punk and Grunge out of Heavy Metal.  Rap and Hip Hop were introduced from the States and Indie bands tried to make an alternative stance to the mainstream and to Dance music.  So, to summarize, the late 20th century and early 21st saw the rise of various types of Dance and Chillout.

Nu Metal

Brit Pop

Heavy Metal.

Gabba Techno.

How about rap, preceded with a 'c'
I second that,Ray!
Sleaze rock in the 80:s, follow by Grunge and Nu-metall
Don't think any music era existed in isolation, for example 1977 was massive for both punk and disco. But going back to my younger days I'd say 1967 Psychadelia, 1970 Glam, 1975 Disco, 1977 Punk, 1979 New wave, 1981 New Romantic, thought rest of 80s was pretty uninterestic until the re-emergance of guitar bands at the end or the decade.
