My son has an open front lawn and each morning it has been visited by a dog spending tuppence.   He waited up until 2am to try and catch the culprit, but I think it came early morning.   Is there anything he can put on the lawn to stop this animal continually using it.   I realise that once this dog has marked his lawn he/she is likely to keep visiting.   I know when a cat soils in the house there are certain things you must not clean with as it only encourages the cat, does the same apply with dogs.  I can only think of pepper.    Please send suggestions quickly I fear for the dogs life my son is getting really naffed off.

I had temorary success with red hot chili powder - the sort you buy loose in Asian grocers - sprinkle liberally over area. The dogs sniff before they settle to wee - they won't settle on that. However dew and rain removes it quickly. You need to identify owner and if owner won't sort it shop them to the local council for dog fouling which is an offence in most local bye-laws.

try buying a large unfriendly reptile and putting on the lawn. i am sure i wouldn't feel comfortable in a toilet with a vicious afghan panther lizard lolloping about.

but seriously, this method aside, try parafin in small amounts all over the lawn. dogs always like to add there scent to a midden, the parafin overpowers the scents, the dogs hate it so they use no 32 over the roads lawn, which serves them right for mowing it at 8.30 on a sunday morning.

Since typing this post, son had kindly neighbour train his security cameras on his front lawn and is 90% certain culprit is a fox, picture not too clear.  However will try your suggestion woofgang failing that its red hot chilli peppers for the fox.   Thanks everyone. Perhaps I'll make enquiries at Edinburgh Zoo there was an article in the paper a long while ago that they were selling dried lion poo which apparently scares the pooches pooless.
if it was a fox its faeces would generally contain ballast such as feathers, bones etc. and is drier and more powdery than a dog. don't ask me how i know this!

mr piper sounds credible.   OK I won't ask how you know this, but I bet someone else will. lol
Mr piper, the foxes muck we used to get in our garden was black, tarry and stunk to high heaven...I guess it depends on what the fox is eating
