slap-up? no idea why though!!
Question Author
i thought of that too-slapup= lavish and lap=drink but don't get the china
Slap-up - Sup + 'pal' (round) = 'china (plate)' - mate
Wha???
China is Cockney rhyming slang for China Plate = Mate.
Mate = Pal
Therefore "China passed round" is pal backwards, hence 'LAP'.

To drink is to 'SUP'.

China passed round during drink is LAP within SUP, which gives SLAP-UP.

Hope everything is now clear!
