My grandparents celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary next month. We are organising a party at the family home. Any ideas what we can do to make it more special. To give it some context, they were born in 1925 and 1927 - grandad served in the army at Anzio (amongst other places, and NO the Americans were not first in there!) and then was part of the forgotten army in Palestine. We really want to make the day special for them. So far we have organised a card from Queenie, and I shall provide "big band" music from the era. have made enquiries about a Spitfire fly past (but unlikely to be unsuccessful). Can anyone help with any ideas to make it an extra special day for them, please.

wow, that sounds really cool, and goodluck with the spitfire. You could research the year they met maybe for popular music, stuff like that, Sorry i havent got better ideas

Sorry, as regards the Spitfire, it should have read "unlikely to be successful". Unless my and my siblings can come up with 3k (extremely unlikely unless my lottery numbers came up tonight).
What about getting everyone to dress up in fashions of the day including hair and make up and stuff?
Too bad about the spitfire...can you not ask further away maybe?
You could also have fireworks, make them a scrapbook of the year they were married, with pics of the place, newspapers' cuttings, and pics of their wedding if they had them.
I'm sure they will appreciate the fact you have gone to such lengths anyway, and will just be so happy to have all their loved ones there to celebrate their amazing life with them!
Oooooooooh China's idea is lovely!!!!
China, you're a real Doll!

I LOVE China's idea too. I already ran that past mum and she was anti (she's the boss). As she said, everyone is 80+ and they just can't be bothered. I tried to argue the toss with her, but it ain't happening. Although me and my siblings may go for it since I just love that era. Women dressed like women and men like gentlemen. Best idea I have had so far is a "this is your life type scenario" with pics on a laptop and film reel from that day and age.
Ah pish to your mum! The older generation don't have to do it, it's to make them have a real feel good time not the other way round... As the advert says, just do it!
would it be possible to get a paper from the day the they were married on,nice to look back on things

That's a good idea Metz!!!
theres loads of websites where old soldiers can trace old comrades. Not saying it would be easy, but if you could find an old friend, that would make a good, 'this is your life' guest that he hasnt seen in 60 years?
How about the "younger" people do it, which would put them in the mood for the party, yet elicit comments/ stories from the older ones? Your idea of a "modern" scrapbook, done as a PP presentation on the PC is a good one! That could start the party going really well.
For my grandparents' diamond wedding, my mum and I dragged out all the old photos and made three big photo boards.
Th first one had their wedding at the top and carried on through the birth of their children and through the years as they grew up - holidays, pets, relatives,. The seconboard began with my grandparents at mum and dad's wedding and progressed through my sister and I bein born and grown up, the thir one stated with my wedding and ended with photos of gran and papa as the very proud great grandparent's of my two girls.
We put the boards up at the party and everybody loved it.It was a good trip down memory lane for lots of people and gran still has the boards hanging on her wall. We trid to include as many of the people and places that were important to them over the years as we could,
Hope you all have a lovely time whatever you decide to do.
A card from the actual Queen, Barmaid ? Sorry if I seem silly asking, it's my grandparents 60th this year too! That's great ! :-)
