Can anyone help me please.  I am trying to find out the name of a male singer from around the 60's time, he may have played in a band and the best way I can describe him is he sang like a goat.  He was not Joe Cocker or Dr Hook or Long John Baldry.

"he sang like a goat" ? what on earth does that mean?

try The crazy world of Arthur Brown

I meant that he had a gruff voice and hung on to his words.

Can you narrow it down a bit, jennymac? Are we searching for UK singers like Van Morrison and  Eric Burden,or the US bluesmen such as John Lee Hooker?

The middle and late 1960's was the period for the frontman to sing like he was gargling pebbles!

Almost every R&B band sang this way, but someone is bound to get it though.

My money's on PJ Proby - he had hit with 'Somewhere', or as he would have it "Sommmmmmwhheeeeeeeerrrre....."
Question Author
Not sure of his nationality, only that he was white, not many hits and none of the answers so far are correct, please keep guessing for me.  Thanks to all replies so far.

Chris Farlowe ("Out of Time" etc) perhaps.

Question Author
Thanks but not Chris Farlowe.

Here's a few more - singer plus band in brackets.

Scott Engel (Walker Brothers)

Paul Jones ( Manfred Mann)

Steve Winwood ( Spencer Davis)

Bill Medly ( Righteous Brothers 'deep, gravelly  voice')

Andy Fairweather-Low ( Amen Corner)

Question Author

Sorry, still none of those. Please keep them coming and thanks

Johnny Kid(d)?

Sorry!

I reckon Gene Pitney. Think of "Something's got a hold of my heart". I can now see / hear the "Goat" influence.

Barry McGuire - Eve of Destruction - New Christy Minstrels ?

Roger Chapman of Family?
