Training Contract applications!!! grrrr

Hi

I am currently applying for TC's, and as those in the legal world know, law firms' applications ( especially the online versions ) are long and incredibly in depth. I am really stuck on one question.

" What career goals have you set yourself"

This seems really straightforward.... but , they give 250 word limit to my answer, and I cant think of how to expand on 'I want to become partner ' !!!

Has any legal bods got any application tips? oh, and no sarcastic answers mamsjet!!! lol

This is where you state your interest in a particular area of law that you wish to specialise in (if any) to complement the existing speciailisms of that particular company; and how you wish to steadily progress in the company in a meaningful way with the aim of eventually becoming a partner.

I am still unsure as to what area I wish to specialise in, however I am drawn to family law. The firm I am applying to seems to have an equally balanced division: Commercial and Generalist. They have uber strong commercial links, with a good private client basis.

I want to appeal to them on my desire to practice family, especially dispute resolution, but am worried that I may shoot myself in the foot by discounting commercial law.

What do you think???

I do not want ot pidgeon hole myself on paper, as they may bin my application if they are looking for someone who is flexible... So do I indicate that I also like commercial??

It is so haaaarrrdd to get a TC. I am on for a 1st in law but I am a mature student and want to sell myself the best I can.

You have just started an excellent answer - it just needs tarting up (and spelling checked).

You tell them that have a special interest in family law and would like to specialise, but have a developing interest in commercial law and would appreciate the opportunity to gain practical knowledge of this area of law. At this early stage in your career, tell them, you are flexible with your career goals but expect to have gained experience of working in several areas of law within x years (5? 7?) with the long term ambition of becoming partner.
