Word Documents .. What have I done!!

Please help before the computer ends up out of the window, I am trying to type a word document and I have pressed something and now have a 'backwards 'p' looking thing' and when I press the space bar I get a dot between each word.. I have just tried to copy and paste an example here but it's not having any of it..what have I done and what can I do to put things right...please help!!

You are showing hidden symbols (paragraph and spaces etc.) and you need to switch this off. On the tool bar at the top you might see the backwards P to toggle, otherwise try the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift and 8 to do the same thing. Enjoy!

I actually have this set up to show all the time - I find it easier to format the page correctly with the option turned on. (The "extra" characters don't print).
