I'm not sure but I think it is from The Peer Gynt Suite by the composer Grieg

..I believe it's The Ride of the Valkyries"
from "Die Walkure"
by Richard Wagner

..as featured in the helicopter scene in the film "apocalyps now"

yep, ermintrude35 is right
Ermintrude is correct, the music may be a reference to the helicopter, as the same piece of music was used in Apocolyps Now, in the helicopter sequence.
I wanted to ask this question, but the confusing thing is that there were two different pieces of music played on the journey. The first part of the journey they played what sounded like something by Thomas Newman - I'm pretty sure it was from a film but I can't think which one. Can anyone help? I recognised the Ride of the Valkyries but it was the piece before that.

I think that the first piece of music was in the Shawshank Redemption but I don't know what is.

If it was the first piece of music then it is Stoic Theme by Thomas Newman which definitely was in the Shawshank Redemption.
