Hi I saw a red/brown rodent climbing out of our bird nesting box today and dont know what it is. It was about 4ins long and quite slender. Looked too small to be a rat and in any case was more red than usual. I also saw one running across a country road near us recently.
Any ideas please?

I thought of a weasel but I didnt see any white under neath its body
ferret perhaps?
Or even a young red squirrel. You don't see many of them about, but there ARE a few.
Its a stote (not sure how to spell it)!!! Stote's are small redish colour, long body. Like a ferret but a smaller version not much bigger than a mouse - i had 1 living in my stable last year, saw it hundreds of times. It kept feeding on my swallows eggs & chicks!
