Thanks Jayne I was brought up on a 'y' but see the dictionary is now saying 'i' is preferred !

I was initially in two minds but also decided to use the 'i' .

Which dictionary are you looking in, Jayne? Like you, I thought it should be Y, and for once Chambers is no help.

Stormonth (1895) gives only Tympany, from latin, tympanum.
