Bus Lanes and Roadworks

Was driving into town today and the roadworks festival has started. Gurr!!!

It's a two lane road (two lanes each direction, separated by a grass verge), the inside lane being an all-day bus lane. The workmen were digging a long trench in the outside lane so all traffic was diverted to the inside (bus) lane. There were no signs announcing that the bus lane regulations had been cancelled.

Was I committing a traffic offence by driving in the bus lane? What road signs should have been in place to explain this situation?

when something similar happened in Upper Woburn Place toward the end of last year, a "Bus Lane Suspended" yellow sign was posted at the start of the works.

You would have commited a more serious offence by sitting in your car for the next three months until the festival was over.
