How do I watch movies from a USB Stick on the XBox 360?

I have a movie on a USB stick, I am unable to watch it I downloaded the latest upgrade from xbox live and it still doesn't work, what am I doing wrong?

It's probably the format if the file you are watching ... I have a telly/mp3/mpeg4 player

the odd thing is that the "obvious" mpg movie files aren't recognised even in the file manager

the AVI files are fine.
