Going back to my previous heading of MC Works, I got the Maxtor out of the box as advised by Ethel and pluged it in. I could see the logo on "My Computor" but that is far as I can get. Is there a booklet or something I can get to guide me as what to do and click. When I do manage to get the HD working and say all my photos are safely installed the next question will be, how do I play the photos back on the laptop at a later date.
I apologise for being such a thicky but after a lot more than 3 score and ten the brain does get slower which I regret but cannot do anything about .

You don't usually have to do anything else for a removable drive. If it shows up in My Computer, then it's ready to use.
Do you know how to move or download files to a hard drive?

No Not a clue
your external drive id best used for storing files ....if you install a prog .... it should really go on an internal drive
(windows will fret if you forget to connect the external drive and it can't find office.

to test your new drive - create a text document
then file | save As and pick the external drive D: or E:?

then .... find a file .....any file (just like that hah!)
and copy it (ctrl+c)

then open my computer....
double click on the new drive
when the window appears paste it into the drive
(ctrl+v)

you should now have two files in the drive!!
