Problem connecting via router

I have Virgin Media Cable, and bought a Netgear WPNB111 router which connects to the cable box in a first floor room, then my PC is downstairs in another room (via 2 walls) and connects wirelessly. However, the signal is always low and it often takes a while to get a connection, and sometimes I can't get a connection for hours. But my laptop seems to connect ok from the same place! Any ideas? Thank you in anticipation! Regards, Mike

What sort of wifi receiver is in the desktop?

Was it wifi enabled when you bought it, or are you using a card or adapter?

I'm using the Netgear USB adaptor (WG111). Sometimes by unplugging this and reinserting it seems to get me a connection but not always - it's a real pain....
Would you consider buying a card for your pc? It would probably be more reliable. Common sense says the problem has got to be with the adapter as everything else is working fine.

Before spending money unnecessarily, check:

Is your firewall blocking the connection?
Are your router security settings allowing the pc to connect?

Try the following - in this very order or it will be of no benefit.

Switch the modem, router and pc off at the mains.
Turn your laptop fully off.
Wait 10 seconds and turn on:

1. Virgin modem - wait for lights to settle (at least 10 seconds)
2. Router - wait again
3. Pc and laptop.

Is it improved?

Hi, I tried all that, but to no avail.

Basically, the problem seems to be: sometimes it connects and the signal is good (although I still can't get onto some websites at peak times - is this normal?)

But also, sometimes there is no signal to the router (there is no light flashing on the adaptor) and I disconnect the adaptor many many times before finally it comes on. Do you think it's an adaptor problem, which a new adaptor would fix? Also, if I get a 'card' for my PC, what do I need to get and from where?
Thanks!
