To anyone who can assist me here - I purchased a laptop, and subscribed to AOL and got their free wireless router - i set everything up as it suggested on the installation disc. When i connect everything up via cables its ok, i cannot however get the internet to come up when i try and go wireless. I have a message that says i am now connected to my wireless connection (i have named it) and that the signal strength is excellent. But as soon as i disconnect the ethernet cable from my laptop i get nothing.............so is it me doing something totally stupid here. My Laptop is an Acer Aspire 5044wlmi, there is a button on the front which is lit up orange and a little symbol next to it which is lit up so i was hoping that meant the wireless is working in that aspect. Is it possible i need to contact AOL? Help please.

ethel - looks like it could help me somehow, so thanks and i will try it .............
To check your wireless card is working properly:

Start - my computer - view system information (left hand panel)

Click on device manager and scroll down to Network Adapters.
Double click and double click on the wireless connection.

The General tab will tell you if it is working properly
yes, but I guess they would charge you just for looking. I assume it's out of warranty?

sorry, probably not very helpful. when ours came back from Curry's I saw the invoice for repairs and I think it was 14. you could take it to a PC World but I don't know what they would do without charging you :o(

thinking back, a member of staff in Curry's cleared the wireless driver off the laptop. when he re-booted, it automatically downloaded a new one. that's a bit too risky to try yourself, unless your confident.

I'd call in somewhere and bat my eyelashes at someone who looks kind! good luck :o)

ethel.........it seems to be working ok after following your last post.

Sara3, i will scout about for someone to look at it. Thanks for your time too.....
If it's working it doesn't need looking at.

Open your router admin pages and have a good look at them - does it have a mac filter which you have inadvertently switched on? My router does, and I can set it to allow or disallow certain MAC addresses. If yours is set to disallow with your MAC address you will never get a connection unless you change the setting.

now you've lost me.............where do i find the admin pages........
It is where you changed your network name.

You normally have to type 192.168.0.1 (or similar) in the address bar

Ethel, sorry, but got tired on friday night and thought you'd gone.........at work again now so can't do anything but in reply to your last post, i named the network when i installed it so i will see if i can get to the place where you re name it and see if I can locate the admin pages.
Okay Squirtle

If you are on Skype you can Instant Message me.

Not on skype Ethel, but will persevere trying all sorts............thanks for your help.....
Start a new thread if you're still stuck - this one is getting buried.
I had this problem when I changed to an Orange Livebox, every pc in the house was connected except mine. It was simply a case of going onto network connections, disabling the wireless connection, and reconecting a few minutes later, and it has been fine since. It would be good if your solution was as simple as this. Good luck.
