In yesterday's Irish Mail on Sunday, my name was proudly displayed as the winner of the Bare Bones competition: and this on my first go!
I bought the paper last week in error (I usually buy the UK edition) but decided to enter anyway, the clues are identical but the address is in Dublin. Almost certainly there are fewer entries than in the UK.

So now a new thesaurus is (hopefully) winging it's way to me...which will come in handy for future crosswords, not to mention my translation and proofreading business...and only possible because of the help I received from this site on the tougher clues, so thanks once again to all who helped!!

Congratulations!! It's always nice when an ABer is successful.
well done! what a nice surprise...hope it's the start of a winning streak for you.
Congrats, and well done.
However I don't want to encourage you as we have more than enough competition for Xwords here in Ireland. The last thing we need is somebody who is not just clever but lucky as well !

Thanks for your replies!

I'd say there would be substantially less entries for the Irish versions of M.o.S crosswords (less people on the island....) but up in the north you can buy BOTH versions (ie the Irish and UK mainland copies); the crosswords work slightly differently but I suppose you could always have a go at both....except a stamp for Dublin costs a whopping 48p nowadays, even though there's LESS distance from Antrim to Dublin than Antrim to London; but there you go.
