Is it necessary and if so, how often?

I do it every now and then but noticed there was some brown on the inside of Pickles bottom teeth?

Any advice please - thanks.

A couple of times a week is probably ok, I know people who do it every day, you can get those chews Dentistix that also help, my dogs get a raw marrow bone once a week (always under supervision) which is good for keeping tartar at bay, if you think about it, in the wild dogs are eating raw bones/meat all the time, no toothbrushes about, lol. I do brush my dogs teeth as well, not every day though.
You should take him to the vet every six monthsto have it done properly.

The vet will tranquilize him and have a really good look, and do a thorough job of getting into all the bits you miss. Plus, he will recognise any problems which may not be obvious to you.

OK thank you both - want to keep her in tip top condition!!
Regular healthy and safe chews/bones help keep their teeth clean and as andy says, get the vet to check them out whenever you are in if you are worried about anything in particular.
I have only ever had one of my dogs done at the vets twice under anaesthetic. Both times were because the vet had the dog in for another reason, and after the first time, I think that the plaque came back really quickly and wondered if it was because they had scraped off some of the enamel. I tend to clean my dogs teeth every week, and give them crunchy biscuits. Although Aloe Vera gel is good at removing tartar too. There is a product called Plaque off, but it gave one of mine a poorly tummy so I dont use it any more.
I give raw bones, iv never needed to see a vet for my dogs teeth cleaned, let alone anything else. Most vets are crap and only in it for the money! not to mention wanting to stuff dogs full of crap drugs for nothing!
Don't know how they work, but I find the Pedigree Dentastix do help. I never clean mine, they get bones and pigs ears regularly.

I would never give a dog an anaesthetic unless it was either an emergency or for an operation, it is too risky just for cosmetic reasons.

You can get a homeopathic treatment called Fragaria, which is a tiny tablet which you give once a day for a month, then once a month as a preventative. This loosens any plaque and as its perfectly natural you can give it even if they are on medication, and is so safe you could give the whole lot in one go.
try to do it every 3-6 months and give him raw hide chews. avoid going to the vets sooo exspensive. plus you cant put teeth care on pet insurance
Sorry the Plaque off didn't suit your dog Jules,my sister has been using it on her dog for about 3 months now and all the plaque has gone.the dog is quite old and has a heart condition, her teeth were really quite bad but the vet couldn't clean them because it would be too risky, she seems fine with the plaque off. Also 2 of my friends have been using it on their dogs with very good results.
I found that dentistix didnt suit my dog , it gave him the runs, so asked the vet when he was in for a booster and he said yes bring him in and we will do it , How much I asked , oh it won't be much about 125!!!!!!! I said whats that for gold crowns?? he laffed ...... i will put up with his bad breath ....
