Last one and I am totally puzzled.

18d Scots cravat that hurts, with knotted layer.

ouraley is a manx word for sacrifice and ourlay is a scots word for cravat but clearly this doesn't fit. What am I missing?

owraley - I googled it and came up with a couple of references...
oops - sorry owrelay

Obscure or what? This word was not in Chamber's Scots Dictionary let alone the standard Chambers!

Thank for your help. I had googled every combination but that one.
Muriel, 'owrelay' is in the standard Chambers. 'Owre' is listed with the suggestion "For compounds see under over-." At the end of the 'overlay' entry, it reads "owrelay a large cravat (Scot)."
