I've heard what I suspect are myths surrounding people with ginger hair - that they emit an odour similar to fox urine. Whilst this sounds a little far fetched, does anyone know if ginger hair people are prone to emit some sort of bodily smell (perhaps due to genetic make-up - as they are generally fair-skinned is this another side-effect)?

So, er... what you're saying is that the musky smell isn't anything to do with this person's hair colour - i.e. going along with everyone else, no?

Well done & a brilliant reply Drusilla - really gave me a pick-me-up!
Laughing so much tears are rolling down my face Drusilla - brilliant.
My son is very ginger but has perfect skin, no frecles and tans very well. He is gorgeous like lots of redheads. I have smelt plenty of brunettes and blondes in my time that stink, I cant imagine its hair colour specific.
Just to add to that, Ime and my husband are dark haired but I thought Ginge was in. Its cool to be a ging at the mo...
PURELY, in the interest of science and as a service to all on Answerbank, I have forsaken my car for the last three days and taken public transport. I do know that this survey should be over a longer period of time and cover males and females of all ages. However, to give a quicker result, I have limited my finding to red-headed females who would appear to be between 18 years and 40 years old. Fo three days - ALL DAY - I have been catching buses and sitting beside, or directly behind, a ginger-haired young lady and attempted to get a scent. I can report (A) There is no noticeable difference in the smell of a red-head to a blonde or brunette (I had to smell these as well to get a comparison). (B) A warning for anyone else who attempts this - be very careful that a husband/boy-friend is not in the vicinity. (C) This survey MUST be conducted within a short distance of the local casualty department. (D) My case is in court next week.
Apparently, there is no such word as 'gullible' in the dictionary.
Perhaps only dogs can smell it...;o)

it is obvious that ginger people do not naturally smell of urine however due to there pasty appearance and generally boring life they cover themselves with urine to get them noticed rather like wild animals and musk.

be honest would anyone be giving ginger people a second thought if it wasnt for the debate about their odour.

and whilst on the subject of ginger people can anyone tell me of a ginger person who has made it to the top of their chosen field as i think coming second in life is another characteristic of the "homeo gingus"

chris evans, boudicca, queen elizabeth, miranda richardson, vanessa redgrave, henry the eighth, ginger spice(!), mick hucknall....like them or not they were all at the top at some point

Don't be ridiculous, it is a proven fact that the smell of fox urine follows gingers around, this is because

Wikipedia: Gingers are generally ugly and highly unattractive therefore they must get there kicks from creatures other than humans. They associate with the fox because of the colour of its fur, ginger human and fox partners are often seen together.

i personally am NOT ginger but i find this absolutely insulting to say the least. how very dare you. not to mention i found people's responses quite hilarious especially drusilla. if you want to wanna beef it out im not afraid lets go you ginger fox-urine-smell phobic person. zoop zoop zoop!!!
It is commonly said that ginger headed people have a distinctive odour. I have come across many ginger headed people and can say that I have often been struck by the fact that they do indeed have a slightly unpleasant urine like odour (to my nose anyway). Personally I don't think this is is a myth, it's simply not deemed politically correct to acknowledge it. But it is scientific fact that people can perceive odours in different ways. I think that we should at least acknowledge that to many people, ginger heads have an unpleasant odour.

Well said Douglas. One of the ginga crowd has just started work in our office, and I am not the only one to have noticed the whiff of fox urine that follows her around the office.
I'll be notifying HR next week, I got a ********** for my BO issue - it is only fair that she is brought up. Equal rights and all that.
I think your getting a little muddled as there is no ginger person that stinks unless they dont wash then yeah, but that is a load of rubbish did yuo make that up your self or ?
I heard everyone who aint ginger all stink anyway! of FISH

I have dated a few ginger people in my past and have ginger friends, 2 of which who weren't related did have the same body odour i wasnt keen on. Not so much the smell of urine but something simliar. It did make me frown from time to time. However i have come across some people who have a strong body odour like a sweet urine smell and they weren't ginger. Just depends on the person i guess.

I suppose it doesnt help having a  strong sense of smell.

Also no its not a silly question to ask despite what others say. Theres no harm in asking.

It shows how sensitive easily people are.
