If you have Virgin CABLE (as I have) you need a DSL router

NOT an ADSL router.

The box normally says "cable" if it is a DSL router.

Note that Virgin also offer broadband down a phone line so make sure you have CABLE.

See the PC World page here, it divides routers up in to ADSL routers and Cable routers

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/editorial/net working_homepage/?int=home_nav
dsl/adsl are (in this context) interchangeable terms for "broadband".

the biggest and most important difference is between cable and phoneline which require different types of modem connection (normally built in to the router package).

once you have the internet connection (wan) working ... you need to get the local network (lan) set up

this is more standard (although does it have to be wireless? - wireless is slower than a wired network , more prone to interference - and is far less secure)

once the network is working there are a couple of simple rules.

All PCs can access the internet .... but
to share files between the PCs ...
each user must log on with a password
and each user must have an account on each machine they need to access.

try google - search "setting up a home network"

and give it a go

Thought i'd been sold wrong router, deff cable no phone involved. Not pc savy did explain this in the shop done lots of research so i knew how to explain myself was given belkin model no f5d7230uk4 wirelwess router broadband internet connection with rj45 ethernet connection states on box shre your adsl connection!!!!!!!!!!!!!.At point of sale did state again it was for cable (virgin) said it would work.

Another trip back into town.

thank you gain
Woa there!!!!
It's the right kit!!!
the spec says "a four-port router with a separate connection for a cable/DSL modem"

your cable feed provides the dsl connection ....
the green port on the belkin box connects to your virgin box (!)
you connect to the belkin

Hello, I'm like you and have Virgin Broadband and also had problems getting the correct router. I went through 3 different ones and got a computer expert in to set them up. They kept 'throwing out' my IP address which stopped me connecting to the internet, the only way to sort this out was to disconnect the router and get Virgin to reset the address. A few weeks ago I saw a Comet advert for a Belkin Router which stated for "Virgin Media customers only", it was Belkin N Wireless Router F5D8233uk4. I got myself one, set it up myself !! and it's working fine.
