was Liam Gillick who designed the map for the programme for the opening of the London Underground (called the Metropolitain Line ) on 19th September 1863.
I understand where John Mayes is coming from but I don't think his answer is very clear. The cover of the current Tube Map contains 9/1/1863 in words - the last date on which there wasn't a London Underground. The lettering uses the colours of all the current Tube lines. Liam Gillick is the (still very much alive, I hope) designer.
