How do soaps such as Eastenders, Coronation Street etc  play up to date chart songs in the background of scenes when the episodes are filmed quite away in advance?

They're actually not filmed that far in advance. In fact sometimes, some parts of episodes may only have been filmed a couple of days previous.
Maybe they add the music after they've filmed it, they add sound effects later - so it could be the same with background music + they can use more recent songs.
or maybe record labels pay to have their tunes featured ?
sound effects are sometimes added well after filming takes place, as most of the scenes in the soaps are shot about 2+ months previous
Usually they are recorded 6 weeks in advance and the music is added to it later.
I'd go with most of the previous answers. Although filming for the soaps takes place about 4-6 weeks in advance, the music gets put in in the editing process
