That happens to me occasionally too. It's like there is something that windows is trying to close and it gets stuck.

I don't worry about it. I just switch the power off. It always restarts OK the next time I turn it on.
if its a tower, check out the cpu fan
could be overheating
quite a common thing

Rollo, I should of said, I cant turn it off , nothing happens. Ive left it for over an hour and... nothing. In the end I have to unplug the thing which I know isnt a good move but Im left with no choice.
311271, it is a tower but how would I know if it is overheating? It sounds ok and there is plenty of ventilation around it. Sorry if thats a bit thick.
'should have said'
Lol Go Lucy Thomas!
I can switch mine off my pressing the start button and holding it in for five seconds.

If that does not work on yours then you have to use the mains switch, or unplug the computer.
Hi

it's doubtful that it's anything to do with overheating.
It sounds like either a disc or memory problem
but could also be a corrupt driver, or even a missing sound file (if the sounds windows plays for startup or shutdown are corrupt or missing the system can freeze - in control panel stop sounds to prove this) - although you'd expect it to freeze every time.

but let's do the simple things first

... you need about 20% free disc space for windows just to start up and shut down (lots of temp files) ... if the disc is too full ... windows can't create the temp files needed to delete the other temp files (pretty zen!)

so have a look at that
then download cc cleaner
http://www.ccleaner.com/download (it's free)
Use it and clean up any rubbish that's lurking on the disc (if you've been switching off ... there will be tons

use it once a week to keep things tidy (don't select all the options ... just the temp files) ... that way you'll be safe enough.

if that doesn't free enough space .... it's time to ask santa for a second hard disc (fixed or USB) or for a pile of CDs or DVDs to backup all the music, films or whatever it is taking up all the space

Lucy

correcting spelling is a little weak ... very aggravating ... and - as this is technology and not literature or language ... just unnecessary when the meaning isn't impared

perhaps you should also contact santa ..... get a life .... or at least an ego

Thanks Rollo and ACthe TROLL. I,ll try all you have said.
AC, totally agree with your response to lucy. I,m afraid I find individuals of that ilk far too silly to take any notice of.
Once again thanks for your help.
Are you using Windows 98? Microsoft never did solve the problem though releasing fixes for it several times.
Question Author
Nah, Ive got XP. ACtheTROLL seems to have been on the right track with Ccleaner.
Thanks anyway.
