it depends on a lot of things, his behaviour while he is in prison, does he have a stable household to go home to,is there a job for him to be released early on tag,and his attitute to the whole system,my wife does this sort of thing for the probation service in nth london, and they go through a lot of procedures to see if he is suitable for this early release scheme,so tell him to behave himself.
as norm says they are quite strict when it comes to tagging someone, the probation service take it really seriously, and have to come and investigate the house and area where they are being tagged to. I believe the prisoner has to undergo a fair bit of scrutinising in the prison also. a friend of mine who was in jail applied for the tag, the probation officer did all the checks at home etc, but the prison board still refused the tag, on the grounds that he had broken bail conditions in the past, so why would he abide to the conditions of a tag???
Im also aware of plenty of people who have been lucky enough to be released early on tag. So i hope all goes well.

Thank you for your help. He lives with his partner in their own home (which is a good home), we have a large, stable home for him also. He as lots of family and friends around him. He had a fantastic probation report pre-sentence and had glowing character references. His problem is that he has served a custodial sentence before. But the prison he was in before sent a report to his barrister stating that he was an exemplary prisoner.

I have to add - the reason he received a custodial sentence was because of his previous offence. he was found guilty in crown court by a jury.
