In the Old Covenant Book of Leviticus,(Vayyiqra in Hebrew) Chapter 19: v27 is found this prohibition : Do not clip (or round) your hair at the temples, nor trim the edges of your beard.

Jewish followers of Torah (usually Orthodox) follow this and other Levitical injunctions literally:
