If you are going on holiday root out a pre-paid phone card.

I can only comment on Florida. We went ther 2 years running and picked up an international phone card, from a flea market stall, for $5 and had plenty of LOW rate credit to call uk.

Before you buy compare the rate per call on each card and ask the assistant what you get for the money. If they are half decent they will let you look at the card first before you buy.
If you're not going on holiday there as the above suggests, and you for example just want to contact a friend and let them contact you cheaply, then look into Skype.

As long as you both have a computer with internet access, you can make free calls, regardless of where you are in the world.
Hi, my parents are in the US at the moment and they use a pre paid phone card. They called me last week on my UK mobile and spent 20 minutes on the phone. It cost them 30 cents.
I think you can buy them from Wal-mart.
Along with your guns and tyres.

hi thanks for your replies, we now live in the usa. my friend is having probs installing skpe at the moment. wondered if there was a cheap way to call her from the usa using a prefix number infront of my landline?
The card previously mentioned is the best way .. you just get a card and you dial a number on the card before the number in UK and it costs peanuts, I chat for hours ..... Then you just call up and top it up if it runs out.
Skype is usually easy to download though ...

Any type of phone or line can be use to make calls to the U.K. when using phone cards, which can be purchased just about anywhere. You can buy cards for 2, 3 and 5 dollars. The time varies for the different cards; I remember on one card I got four hours talk time while on another I got three hours.
Have read these postings with interest as I am off to the States for 3 weeks in November. Cherie, for instance, you say your Mum spoke to you on your UK mobile..... did it cost you anything your end, to accept the call?
I find that is a big problem with mobiles when abroad - the costs of receiving calls/texts/voicemails etc.
Is there anyway theses costs can be avoided?
you can do it on either ..... also US does not know that UK mobiles are mobiles and US mobiles do not have a special prefix so I don't think UK knows they are mobiles ....
