A man thought putting his rubbish in a public litter bin was a good idea seeing as he had to wait another fortnight before his next rubbish collection. The council traced the man after finding a letter addressed to him amongst the rubbish. They accused him of flytipping and demanded a 75 fine to be paid. What do you think? Was this man right to put his rubbish in a public bin rather than wait a fortnight until it is collected? Or are the council being unreasonable, they are not providing enough rubbish collections; therefore people are finding other ways to dispose of their waste?

I have done the exact same thing myself occasionally - when we have fortnightly collection due to bank holidays (my bin day is Monday).

Fish heads and raw meat bones - I have wrapped them tightly in a small parcel and put them in the litter bin which I know is emptied daily.
These are the very foodstuffs that quickly start to smell and will attract the local foxes, cats and rats. We are not allowed to put a dustbin out - we have to put the black bin bag out the night before collection is due.

So I sympathise with the man - if it was a small packet he put in the bin, and not a binful.

The mess that these vermin make ripping into bags - usually to get the soiled nappies, has to be seen to be believed. And the council don't clear this up.

"...send a message to the council alerting them how urgent it is that we need better service. "

The council had only emptied his bin 3 days before.

The refuse contained food waste which should have been in a bin with a lid on it. The bin he used in the street had no lid so would be accessible by vermin.

IggyB says that everyone knows that you can't put household waste in a litter bin ~ well I for one didn't know this. He/she also doubts if the person concerned really does have his rubbish collected only at fortnightly intervals. I can tell you that where I live this is certainly the case and it is a nightmare, even though we are a household of only two people. How large families manage I can't imagine.
