He went back in time so that he could be in bed when the aeroplane hit the house and be killed by it (instead of having got up early and left), then he wouldn't have to go through all the weirdness that he experienced subsequent to the plane hitting (hallucinations involving giant rabbits and so on). Or I think that was it anyway...
He went back in time to ensure that he died when the engine fell onto the house, as his survival caused the time rift that would kill his mother and sister. At least that's the "official" explanation. I personally think it makes more sense that it's all a dream he has as he dies (after all, "the dreams in which I'm dying are the best I ever had"). P.S., I consider the film to be greatly over-rated and long for the day that people finally realise that it wasn't so hot after all.
I think the original version of the film, (not the directors cut) is left the way it is so you can form youre own opinion. I dont think the film is overated at all, thats why it bombed at the box office and only until it was released on dvd has grown a cult following. You either love it or hate it.
