i have a motorbike but im thinking of becoming a mod instead of a rocker. i've noticed that some of the old lambrettas are not the 'twist and go' types and have gears that look like a small pedal- how do use them? it doesn't look like you can get your foot under it so i can only only assume its a different mechanism....
thanks in advance.

I think what you are seeing is the pedal rear brake, gears were selected by a twist grip on the opposite handgrip to the throttle, at least that's how I remember things.
The pedal as Fitzer says is for the rear brake. The gearchange and clutch are operated by the left hand.Twist the grip down for first then up for the other three gears, sounds complicated but is surprisingly easy.If you are thinking about an older bike beware of the front brake,it's there but it don't do much :-) also all of them will be Two-stroke so will cost more to run as you need to add two-stroke oil as well
Sally Im 38 and have had a geared vespa for 3 months

What the others have said is right, foot brake is for the rear which u hardly use and your gears are on the left.

The classic vespa px is in the last year of production this year, after 30 years! So if you buy one now its also an investment.

The new vespas have a hydraulic front brake as opposed to the old drum one which was rubbish, even though its two stroke I can do 110 to the gallon and as regards to oil it self mixes with petrol but a litre is 5.00 and that will last a couple of months in my case.

Go and get one then go on ride outs rallys etc, and bhecome a scooterist lol
