Ok so its not a question but Im sure the Ed will let it stay a while.

I went to my nuchal scan at babybond this afternoon.

Baby was found to be boxing and kicking away without a care in the world. The sonographer was great, she explained every detail to us and showed us the measurements she required. Baby was very obliging and moved to the exact position for the skin at back of neck to be measured then swam about and waved etc.

minicrx was fascinated and when she'd finished and i got up he pulled up his jumper and climbed onto the bed pmsl!

I was expecting to have results on Monday as it was close to the end of week but we got a phone call whilst on way home with the results of combined bloods and scan.

Risks for my age are 1 in 266 but this pregnancy has odds of 1 in 5992 for Downs and 1 in 9000 ish for edwards syndrome. I must say that is one hell of a weight off my shoulders.

The sonographer was so lovely and babybond was such a nice facility that im already planning on paying for a 4d scan later on.

Oh and they changed my dates very slightly to 11+6 instead of 11+4 but ive got my NHS scan on wednesday so i will keep quiet :)

That's fantastic news Red, so pleased for you. I can't wait for the 12 week scan for you. I've gone all broody lately (Mr Boo looks scared). When you go for your 20 weeker, you finding out?

And awwww bless Mini Red.Is he excited too?
when you said they changed your dates to 11+6 from 11+4 what does that mean? just trying to understand abit more. how many weeks are you red?
that's fab news.

Do you get the scan free of charge in your area? We don't get them here (Kent) and they are sooo expensive

You understand that the Nuchal scan is not a result? The only conclcusive result you can get is with an amnio or CVS test
It means she due two days earlier!

Glad everything is goin well. Bless minicrx! lol Thats too cute!

Im also planning on having a 4d scan done, which reminds me, I must get that booked!
Hmmmm ojread, which scans dont you get for free? The normal 12 week and 20 week ones or any additional ones?
the nuchal

We get a 12 week scan and anomoly scan at 20 weeks
What's a nuchal scan anyway? I never had one of those???
Its the nuchal fold at the back fo a baby's neck
The thicker it is the higher the risk of downs

Thanks all

B00, im not sure minicrx really knows whats going on, last week he told me he had 2 babies in his sock, but then hes only 27 months old lol

Confused gal. Im now 11wks and 6 days wheras i thought i was 11 weeks and 4 days.

OJ, i had to pay 160 for a combine bloods and scan. I am well aware that i may still be that 1 in 5992 that has a Downs baby but all physical markers were checked and all point to a very low risk so i wont risk a 2% chance of misscarriage by going for a CVS(?) test.

I now have my 12 week dating scan and my 20 week anomoly scan with the NHS to come

Psychick, my friend has had a few 4d scans and they produce some lovely DVDs at babybond.
Hmmm.......they did a nuchal scan with me at 12 weeks and I didnt have to pay for it, Im in Kent too.

yes B00, the nuchal scan is to check a possible marker of Downs. its been discovered that Downs babies often have a thicker layer of skin at the back of neck. Anything above 3mm is classed as a possible risk and along with the growth of nasal bone and other markers can give the odds. Little hiccups was 1mm.
Question Author
Both Norfolkand Suffolk only give nuchals on NHS if mother is over 40.

Its 150 and a 2 week wait for results if you go private within NHS but 160 and results same day with babybond.
Ahhh I see, well in that case i'm extra glad it went ok :-)

thanks B00, i didnt really worry last time, but have recently found out that my partner had a cousin with Downs who didnt survive very long. My sisters-in-law get free scans but im not a close enough relative apparently
Lucky you Psychick :)

red - sorry, didn't mean to sound offish, but so many people don't realise they are not a result but an indicator or risk. Alone, a nuchal is about 85% accurate, done with bloods that raises to some where between 87% and 93% accurate.

I agree about the MC risk with a CVS and/or amnio - neither were an option for me. My pregnancy age risk was 1:205 but I chose not to have any invasive testing, just the bloods which alone are more accurate than the nuchal

Best of luck with your pregnancy - I don't often pop over here :)

its ok OJ i didnt think you sounded offish and if i wasnt aware of what the results really meant then the extra info would have been more than welcome. Who knows, there may be someone in similar position who reads this and wasnt aware. I do know of someone who had a Downs baby even though her odds were 1 in 3000 so i know its not an exact science without anmio or CVS.
Congrats Red, so glad everything went ok and your mind is more at rest. You can relax and enjoy being preggers now :-)

I had my first scan last week (first baby so a bit scared) and I had totally convinced myself of awful things - that she wouldn't find anything or that she would find something but it wouldn't have a heartbeat... it was horrible. Thankfully, mini-nat was boogying away (after eventually deciding to come out from behind the placenta) and was wiggling their legs and arms, looked like they were break dancing. I felt like such a weight was lifted, and I am glad that you feel that too.

Mini-crx sounds so cute! When we told my five year old neice a baby was growing in my tum, she asked if it was a boy or girl and when we said we didn't know yet she replied "Oh, so it's still a fish at the moment then?". :-S Bless.

lol a fish. thats sweet!

Im glad your scan went well too, for some reason i worried more with this second, perhaps because i now know from many friends how things can go wrong early on.

I will start to enjoy it more once i feel human again lol
ah red glad everything is ok. lol about your little boy. You must have a 4d scan my friend had one with her little girl and the detail is unbelievable.it was dear but well worth the money. Good luck as things progress hugs and kisses for you and hiccup xoxo
