why do house bricks have holes in them.

some have holes others recesses, they are called dogs ad are part of the profile into which the cement bonds to give strength.

Also, the holes mean there is a reduction in the volume of clay required, making them cheaper and lighter, without reducing their inherent strength. Incidentally, the same concept is applied to concrete blocks.

and as long as I've been in construction, the holes/recesses have been called 'frogs'!
