When on microsoft word 2003 I used to have a kind of toolbar with numbers along the top i.e. the typing limits it had little sliding things like egg timers on it so one could alter the size of the typing area. It has dissapeard. If I click on 'view' and then 'web layout' it appears but only for a few seconds. How can I get it back permanantly. Thanks to all in advance for your suggestions

Go to View - Toolbars. Have you got standard and formatting ticked?

Of course this might not be set up in your standard word template. The page that first loads when you turn word on.

This is how it is in Word 2000 by the way so could be different in 2003.

Thank you Machecoul, I have played around with it and yes I have standard and formatting boxes ticked. I have now managed to get the 'ruler' on screen but it is towards the left hand side and not central on my screen..........anyone with any ideas would be very much appreciated
could be that your margins are not set correctly go to FILE page set up and the usual settings for right and left margins are 3.17
I have my page set to Print Layout at 100% and this seems to have the rulers in the centre of the page.
