Does it not occur to you, sincnoel that just perhaps Giacometti was born in a place that was Italian and is now part of Switzerland?
Also http://nobelprize.org has both spellings of Cherenkov/Cerenkov in the same article, so who are you to say Kate is being too smart? Get off your high horse and enjoy the crossword for goodness sake.
Giacometti is either Swiss or he is Italian, unless he has dual-nationality, which doesn't appear to be the case. There are no parts of Switzerland that were once parts of Italy.
