We are a couple in our 60's and we would like to visit Crete. We like historical sight seeing.
Can anyone recommend a hotel. We don't like beaches, thumping disco music, or noise, just a nice hotel/food. We are also not sure of which resort to choose - we would like a harbour for a stroll - but nothing like Aya Nappa (spelling) Many thanks in advance.

Rethymnon and Chania are very pretty towns with harbours. They're in the western half. As I recall the most interesting historical sites like Knossos are further east, but reachable on coach trips or if you hire a car. Just checking when you mention Aya Napia, though - that's in Cyprus, not Crete; are you sure you have the right island in mind?

Thanks jno. We shall be hiring a car and I shall look at Rethymnon and Chania.
I knew Aya Nappa was in Cyprus. It's just that I know that is the sort of place we don't want.

I think Agios Nikolaos is the Cretan equivalent of Ayia Napia, so that might be the one to avoid (younger ABers may have more up-to-date info than me on this). All these places have various spellings, eg Hania for Chania
I agree with Jno about Rethymnon and Chania but I personally prefer Chania for the beautiful Harbour at night and nice places to eat.Chania is also bigger. As for a Hotel I can recommend the Greek National Tourist Board Site. I,ve used it a lot. It is www.gto.gr.I,m from the UK but live in Greece although not Crete but you will love Crete. Enjoy you holiday!
Do not go to Malia, It is 100% the opposite of what you are looking for.
I stayed in Crete once at a hotel called the Stella Maris, it was quiet and select, but I cant remember where in Crete.
