The netgear wireless router I have needs to be connected to my computer with an RJ-45 plug...

My BT unit currently connects via USB and \i want to dump this and use the netgear modem.

I have a RJ-45 size socket in the back that is used for networking - can this also be used for an internet connection from the wireless router?

Yes, a router is part of a network.
My router MUST be plugged in to my broadband modem to work - it is not a combined modem/router.

A combined modem/router will NOT work with my ISP.

So it's not a simple yes/no answer.

How can I piggy-back the BT unit?

If I use a splitter the BT modem won't work??

Any idea's on the best way to set this up? I'm thinking I might get a a simple router only.

Thanks
BT is ADSL, so since the BT modem is a USB one you'll need to get a wireless router+modem in one, not just a router:

It is a modem/router...

The problem is it's not a USB cable it's an RJ-45 plug - does that matter?

Thanks again.

BTW, the netgear one shown above is the one I have.

Somehow I have to set the DHCH (spelling?) to make this work and I can't find a decent explanation to acheive this (the instructions are pretty crappy).
Yes, you'll need to use the RJ-45 connection. This is far better than USB for this sort of thing anyway.

You shouldn't have to ignore the DHCP settings. Just plug it in and hopefully it'll work (you will want to change the default password etc. from the router's pages, the 192.168.1.1 stuff).
