Snowywhite - If you're a serious crossword solver you really do need a copy of Chambers: (almost) all the compilers use it.

Chambers definition - a blow on the nose; a bloody nose; a severe rebuff; a strong head-wind; a prying person.

Re 'My hat!' - I haven't actually heard anyone use it lately, but it was very common in my youth.
